Shavuos, Our Anniversary Party
|
This Saturday night, we celebrate Shavuos, a far-reaching spiritual event that touches the very essence of our souls. Our sages have compared it to a wedding between G-d and the Jewish people. On Shavuos, we celebrate the anniversary of G-d choosing us as His special people. Just as a husband gives his wife a special and precious gift on their wedding day, so G-d gave us the Torah.
When a man and woman marry under the chuppah, they each think: “At last, I have met my Zivug, my soulmate. Now, I am truly whole.” They love each other so much. They think no one has ever experienced a love as great as theirs. Never will they fight! Thirty years later, on their anniversary, their love has ripened and grown through all of their shared joys and sorrows, their continual giving to each other, their separations and reunions, and yes, even through their fights and reconciliations. They think: “Thirty years ago we thought our love was so great. We thought we were whole, but look at us now…” More than 3,300 years ago, G-d chose us and gave us the Torah as a wedding gift. Now, we are more in love with G-d and His Torah than ever before - more even than on that spectacular day that we received it on Mt. Sinai. But honestly, after all this time, isn't it time for another honeymoon? Let's leave this looooong exile and go on a trip to Geulah and have a nice tour of the World-to-Come. Would you like to come along? |
